As a mechanism, a train horn is relatively simple. A nozzle and diaphragm, enclosed within a power chamber, is impacted by a flow of compressed air. Once the air is pushed through the horn, oscillation takes place – essentially the diaphragm vibrating against the nozzle. This action produces sound.

Used around the world, train horns have grown in popularity with both train hobbyists and automobile enthusiasts. For the latter, train horns are used to customize personal vehicles and come in a variety of sound, quality, and price. Precision is necessary when assembling a horn kit, but the reward is worth it. Train horn kits typically start at a few hundred dollars but can reach up to $1,000+.
